Stars! Movies! Statues! Hollywood!

We are in the midst the fifth season - award season!

Starting in mid October, Hollywood and other big players in the global movie sphere start handing out their statues to their favorite movies, actors, writers, directors and others who are involved in the 'biz'. Almost every weekend from October through the end of February one event chases the next: Critics Choice, SAG, Independent Spirit, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and of course, the crown jewel, the grand daddy of all award shows the Academy Awards better known as the Oscars!




I LOVE award season. Whenever I watch an award show, I turn my phone on silent, pour myself a glass of wine and tear into a bag of cookies, while lounging on the couch in my sweats. Seeing all these skinny celebrities make me hungry!

This year, the Oscars celebrate their 89th anniversary! Oscar is still looking good for his ripe old age and is still as popular as ever. In Tinseltown, rumor has it that the statue's nickname 'Oscar' was coined by someone working at the Academy claiming that the little golden man looked like her uncle Oscar. Although small in stature, the little fella weighs in at over 8 lbs according to the official Academy website oscars.org.

Every year it gets more difficult to keep up with watching all nominated movies before the award show because movies are just getting better and better. In the past, I wanted to see maybe three or four nominated movies. This year, I want to see them all!

And just because of Natalie Portman, I also put Jackie on the list. Plus, I adore Meryl Streep, so I will watch Florence Foster Jenkins too. Sounds like I need to take a week of vacation to squeeze them all in before February 26th!

No one should ever have to appologize for their accomplishments

Photo by John Fornander on Unsplash Naomi Osaka was robbed of which was probably one of the greatest moments in her career to date. She beat her idol in the U.S. Open but she didn't appear happy about. I got the feeling she didn't even dare to be happy when she claimed her prize and her trophy. While everyone is shifting blame for the anticlimactic victory of this young, talented tennis player to the supposedly overcritical umpire, I believe there are more people to blame: Carlos Ramos certainly played a role in contributing to the game turning sour by ticking off Serena Williams and consequently the crowd with is judgement calls. I don't know enough about tennis to know whether his ruling were wrong. Serena's coach Patrick Mouratoglou is another person we can point a finger at as he definitely, and later also admitted, coached her during the game. Serena also shares part of the blame in my opinion by making the event about her being treated unfairly. O

Repatriation Nation

I recently read an article about someone who 'repatriated' after six months of traveling. The writer talked about how difficult it was to reconnect with friends after she (or he - not sure) had been gone for so long. First, I think that if you lose your friends after you have been gone only for six month, they may not have been real friends anyway. So... good ridance. Second, try reconnecting with friends from school after you have been gone for over a decade! When I made it known on social media that I was about to move back to my home country, I had a lot of people from school reconnect with me and wanting to meet up as soon as I got there. I was excited that so many of them were interested in what I had been up to. The first friend I met up with is someone I went to kindergarden and school with.
